In Sejong, a national project has officially been launched that will make Korea one of the first countries to test Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as part of Periodic Technical Inspections (PTI). MAHA is supplying the inspection system developed for this purpose: MAST 2.0, the MAHA Adaptive System Tester. The project is being implemented in cooperation with KOTSA, KÜS, Hanyang University, dSPACE Korea, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz Korea. The system will be developed by the end of 2028, with the first 60 test benches scheduled to enter operation from 2029.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems have long been standard equipment in modern vehicles – from autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assistance to adaptive cruise control. Until now, however, there has been no practical solution for verifying their long-term functionality during a vehicle’s service life. Korea is now taking a pioneering step by making ADAS inspections an integral part of the Periodic Technical Inspection (PTI). MAHA has been selected to develop and supply the required inspection technology.
From the Homologation Laboratory to the Inspection Lane
Until now, functional testing of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems has largely been confined to homologation and vehicle type approval. The test equipment used in these environments is highly specialised and correspondingly expensive, making large-scale deployment across thousands of inspection stations economically unfeasible. This is precisely where the MAST 2.0 comes in. It transfers ADAS testing from the development laboratory into routine PTI operation – delivering a robust, practical and cost-effective solution at only a fraction of the cost of conventional laboratory equipment. This significantly lowers the entry barrier for inspection organisations and makes recurring ADAS inspections economically viable on a on a broad scale.
A Consortium Setting a New Inspection Standard
The Korean project is being driven by a consortium comprising government authorities, inspection organisations, simulation technology specialists and vehicle manufacturers. Partners include the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) as the national inspection and approval authority, inspection organisation KÜS, Hanyang University, simulation and validation specialist dSPACE Korea, together with Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz Korea. Within the consortium, MAHA contributes its inspection technology specifically developed for PTI applications.
“KADAS represents a significant milestone in the evolution of vehicle inspection as the world's first Vehicle-in-the-Loop (ViL)-based assessment and periodic inspection system for automated driving vehicles. Through close international collaboration, KOTSA is committed to establishing a reliable and objective inspection framework that will contribute to safer mobility and the development of future international standards,” explains Dr Jaehwan Jeong, Leader of the Advanced Safety Research Department at KOTSA and Project Leader of KADAS.
The timetable is ambitious. The system will be developed and validated by the end of 2028, with the first installations entering regular operation from 2029. Korea will therefore establish one of the world’s first nationwide infrastructures for recurring ADAS inspections as part of periodic vehicle testing.
“Advanced Driver Assistance Systems make decisions in fractions of a second – and those decisions can save lives. Ensuring that their functionality is verified not only during vehicle approval but throughout the entire service life of a vehicle represents a significant step forward in road safety,” says Dr Peter Geigle, CEO of the MAHA Group. “Our objective was to bring this inspection out of expensive specialist laboratories and make it affordable for everyday use at every inspection station. That is exactly what the MAST 2.0 delivers. The fact that Korea is among the first countries to implement this approach demonstrates the direction in which vehicle inspection is evolving worldwide.”
ADAS Inspection Is Also Gaining Momentum in Germany
The development is not limited to Korea. Inspection organisations in Germany are also preparing for the introduction of recurring ADAS inspections. The first MAST 2.0 in Germany will be installed at TÜV SÜD in Ulm in October 2026, providing German inspection organisations with a practical platform to gain experience with the new inspection procedure. Additional organisations are expected to follow.
Experience the MAST 2.0 Live at Automechanika
Those wishing to see the system for themselves will have the opportunity to do so in September. At Automechanika Frankfurt 2026, taking place from 8 to 12 September, MAHA will present MAST 2.0 live – and visitors will be able to experience an inspection run for themselves. Visitors will find MAHA in hall 8.0 at stands C06 and C07.
